Wedding Day Roles

By: Radhika Khan | 16 Aug 2016

I have noticed that as we creep closer to many couples’ big days I am getting more questions about what roles those closest to the couple should take on leading up to the wedding and on the actual day. There are definitely some traditions surrounding the roles at a wedding but with many people living in different cities some of the responsibilities end up falling on others. To make things a little clearer I have broken down the roles and what each person is responsible for:

Parents of the Bride

  • Both parents, father, or someone else close to the bride walk the bride down the aisle
  • Share a father/daughter dance with the bride
  • Help with any pre-wedding duties (as the couple sees fit)

Maid of Honour

  • Plan and host the bridal shower and bachelorette
  • Assist the bride with wedding related shopping (dress, accessories, bridesmaids dresses)
  • Help make favours and address invitations
  • Responsible for her own travel, attire, and accessories
  • Hold the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony
  • Witness and sign the marriage license
  • Carry an emergency kit for the bride (but if you have hired someone like me, we will always have on hand so your MOH doesn’t have to carry one)
  • Keep the groom’s ring during the ceremony until the ring is requested
  • Give the second speech/toast during the reception
  • Give the bride a shower gift and the couple a wedding gift
  • Main contact for the wedding coordinator
  • Help out wherever she can

Bridesmaids

  • Assist MOH however they can
  • Help MOH plan and pay for the bridal shower and bachelorette
  • Responsible for their own travel, attire, and accessories

Flower Girl

  • Walks down the aisle before the bride, sprinkling flower petals as she walks
  • Her outfit can be paid for by the bride and groom if they see fit otherwise it would be her parents’ responsibility

Parents of the Groom

  • Traditionally they plan and pay for the rehearsal dinner
  • Share in a mother/son dance with the groom
  • Help with any pre-wedding duties (as the couple sees fit)

Best Man

  • Plan and host the bachelor party
  • Responsible for his own travel, attire, and accessories
  • Witness and sign the marriage license
  • Keep the bride’s ring during the ceremony until the ring is requested
  • Give the first speech/toast during the reception
  • Give the couple a wedding gift
  • Main contact for the wedding coordinator
  • Help out wherever he can

Groomsmen

  • Assist Best Man however they can
  • Help Best Man plan and pay for the bachelor party
  • Responsible for their own travel, attire, and accessories

Ring Bearer

  • Walks down the aisle with or before the Flower Girl
  • His outfit can be paid for by the bride and groom if they see fit otherwise it would be his parents’ responsibility

Ushers

  • Arrive early to help setup for ceremony (if necessary)
  • Greet guests as they arrive and guide them to their seats
  • Hand out programs for the ceremony or possibly water if it is an outdoor ceremony

All of the people listed above should attend the wedding rehearsal and dinner with the exception of the ushers but of course this all comes down to what the couple wants.

As always, have a RAD day!
